Korea’s Newly Effective Amendment to Food Standards and Specifications

On 29 Oct 2015, Korea’s MFDS announced a new round of amendment to “Food Standards and Specifications”. Major points are as below:

  • A food category name change: Processed meat is now called processed food containing meat. Processed egg is now called processed food containing egg.

  • The requirements for food raw materials subject to temporary permit in accordance with the provisions articulated within “Food Standards and Specifications” are elaborated. Once the conditions are met, the food raw material could be included in Appendix I “Raw Materials Allowed to be Used in Food” or Appendix II “Raw Materials Allowed to be Used in Food with Limitations”.

  • General experimental methods have been revised, including:

a. Formulation of testing for Lead and cadmium in fruit and vegetable juice: application scope of lead in general experimental methods;
b. Methods for lactobacillus strains and EHEC;
c. Analytical methods for four pesticide residue including Ipfencarbazone, tefuryltrione, triafamone and imazapyr are newly added;
d. Analytical methods for contaminants in livestock and aquatic products are unified with those in the Food Code;
e. Physical and chemical methods are newly added for the qualitative determination of veterinary drugs.
f. Testing methods for propoxyphenylthiosildenafil, homotadalafil propoxyphenylthioaildenafil are added for contaminants in food
g. Quantitative methods for aminoglycosides antibiotics, amoxicillin, and penicillin in food as well as tetracyclines in honey are revised.

  • Cypermethrin MRL as a veterinary drug is added while the pesticide MRLs have been removed.

  • The designated application scope for five veterinary drugs including novobiocin, ormetoprim, oxolinic acid, oleandomycin and zoalene is changed from “meat” to “muscle meat”.
