Macao Amends the Maximum Residue Limits for Pesticides in Food

Macao revises the maximum residue limits (MRLs) and extraneous maximum residue limits (EMRLs) for pesticides in foods such as fruits and cereals.

On February 9, 2023, Executive Council of Macao SAR announced the finalization of the draft to amend the Administrative Regulation No 11/2020 Maximum Residue Limits for Pesticides in Food, in which the MRLs and EMRLs of pesticides in food were revised. The amendment was uploaded on February 13, 2023 with immediate effect.

Major revisions:

  • The amendment adds new residue limits for pesticides in foods such as fruits and cereals, currently covering 230 varieties of pesticides.

  • Regulated crop varieties are increased to 16 major categories, and their corresponding residue limit items are expanded to more than 5,500.

Examples of residue limits for pesticides:

Additionally, according to the Administration Committee of the Executive Council in Macau, a survey has been done prior to the new amendment, which revealed that over 99% of current imported fruits and cereals met the new requirement. Therefore, this regulatory update will not have great impact on future food imports.
