China Updates Maximum Residue Limits for Pesticides in Foods

The 2016 version of “GB2763-2016 Standard of Maximum Residue limits for Pesticide in Foods” has been released recently, and will be formally implemented from Jun. 18, 2017. Compared to the previous version, 490 pesticide MRLs have been newly added in this 2016 version, totaling 4140 pesticide MRLs of 433 types of pesticides in 13 categories of agricultural products.

The 2016 version of “GB2763-2016 Standard of Maximum Residue limits for Pesticide in Foods” has been released recently, and will be formally implemented from Jun. 18, 2017. Compared to the previous version, 490 pesticide MRLs have been newly added in this 2016 version, totaling 4140 pesticide MRLs of 433 types of pesticides in 13 categories of agricultural products.

Major changes of the new standard are summarized as below:

  • 184 pesticide MRLs have been established for 24 types of pesticides prohibited or restricted for use, such as fenamiphos.
  • The establishment of MRLs for 33 types of pesticides without dietary risks according to relevant international practices has been exempted.
  • Corresponding testing methods have been recommended according to the MRLs stipulated in the new standard. Moreover, 106 standards for pesticide residue determination methods used for vegetables, fruit, honey and honey products, animal-derived food, grain and dairy foods have been released (see CL news report on Jan. 4, 2017).

In “China’s 13th five-year plan” it is planned that more than 6,000 more standards regarding pesticide MRLs will be formulated in the future, to cover more vegetables, fruits, as well as featured agricultural products in China.
