New York State Lowers Action Level for Lead in Spices by 40%

New York State has lowered the lead action level for certain spices to 0.6 ppm, effective on January 1, 2028.

On June 5, 2026, the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYS AGM) released new action level for the presence of lead in certain consumer spices to protect public health and the safety of the food supply. The state is lowering the acceptable threshold for lead by 40 percent to 0.6 parts per million(ppm), as the strictest standard in the country. The implementation of these new regulatory action level will officially begin on January 1, 2028.
