Glycine

Glycine has been newly approved as a food additive for improving the flavor of food according to the “Notice No.3 of 2017” published by NHFPC on 21 March 2017.

Glycine can now be applied in prefabricated meat products (food category 08.02), cooked meat product (food category 08.03), flavoring (food category 12.0), fruit and vegetable beverage (food category 14.02.03), vegetable protein beverage (food category 14.03.02) and fragrance used as food in all kinds of food products (except the food category in schedule B.1 of GB 2760).

The permitted concentrations and usage scope of glycine remain the same as previously approved in GB 2760 “Food Safety National Standard—Food Additive Usage Standard”.

Glycine has officially recognized as a food additive by food regulatory departments and agencies in EU, the US and Japan.

Ethyl linalyl ether

Ethyl linalyl ether has been approved for usage as a food flavor for improving the flavor of food in all kinds of food products (except the food category in schedule B.1 of GB 2760).

According to an accompanying technical appendix, Ethyl linalyl ether can be applied at a quantity based on specific need for production.

β-carotene

β-carotene has been approved for usage as a colorant in processing meat products (raw meat conditioning material) (food category 08.02.01) to adjust the color of products.

Previously, β-carotene had been listed in GB 2760 “Food Safety National Standard—Food Additive Usage Standard” for usage in modified milk, fermented milk, cheese products, fat desserts, canned fruits, jams, candied fruits, dried vegetables, pickled vegetables, candy, convenient rice and noodle products and cooked meat products.

The quality specification of β-carotene can follow either one of the three national standards and notice, including GB 8821-2011 “Food Additive β-carotene”, GB 28310-2012 “Food Additive β-carotene (fermentation method)” and Notice No. 6 of 2017 by NHFPC.

β-carotene is widely recognized as legal food additive around the world with major economies permitting its use as a colorant in food.
