On 14 Aug 2015, TFDA issued Requirements for Nutritional Labelling of Infant and Follow-up Formula and Foods for Special Medical Purposes, which will come into effect on 1st Jul 2016. The new rule specifies the labeling requirements for nutritional elements and sets the requirements for energy and nutrient content labeling, permitted units and acceptable error range.
The following items should be indicated on the nutritional label of infant formula:
Energy;
Protein;
Fat, saturated fat, trans fat, linoleic acid, α-gamma linolenic acid;
Carbohydrate, sugar;
Sodium;
Water;
Vitamin;
Dietary fiber;
Inositol;
L-carnitine;
Ash;
Minerals (excluding Na) and microelements;
Other nutrients labeled by companies voluntarily
For follow-up formula, items in red do not require mandatory labelling.
In Taiwan, infant and follow-up formula includes infant formula (for babies at the age of 0-6 months), follow-up formula (for babies at the age of 6-12 months) and infant formula for special medical purposes. Foods for special medical purposes include foods that have functions of adjusting protein, amino acid, fat or vitamins and can reduce allergy, meal replacement for losing weight, etc. These products will be affected and should be labeled accordingly.
