On 1 May 2014, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) preannounced the draft to “Matters for Nutrition Claims of Packaged Foods”. This latest document stipulating nutrition claims was drafted in line with the previously released “Matters for Nutrition Labeling of Packaged Foods”.
The full text of the Matters divides into eight parts, which separately introduce:
Legal origins
Stipulations on nutrition claims of packaged foods (nutrition claims of which are divided into essential and supplementary intakes)
Stipulations on nutrition claims of foods in capsule or tablet forms with limited daily consumptions
Stipulations on nutrition claims and measurements of packaged foods that need brewing or diluting before eating
Stipulations on packaged foods that carry two or more nutrition claims
Ban on nutrition claims of nutrients excluded from announcements of competent authorities
Stipulations on body functions of nutrients
Foods not applicable to the Matters
The Matters are open for public consultation for a 30 day period beginning the day after the announcement. Meanwhile the draft “Standard for Nutrition Claims of Packaged Foods”, which was made public in Sep, 2013, will be rescinded.
