Taiwan Revises Food Additive Regulation

Four thickeners have been deleted from the food additive positive list in Taiwan.

On Dec. 1, 2016, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) preannounced the revision of “Standards for Specification, Scope of Application and Limitation of Food Additives”, which is open for public consultation for 60 days, and will be implemented after one year.

  • The specifications for modified food starches have been revised.

  • The requirements for thickener have been revised. Four types of glycerin starches are deleted from the approved food additive list, including acetylated distarch glycerol, succinyl distarch glycerol, distarch glycerol, and hydroxypropyl distarch glycerol, which means these four thickeners can no longer be used in foods as food additives.
