India Revises Food Additive Regulations

On Dec. 3, 2015, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) announced the revision of food additive regulations in “Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulation, 2015”.

The main changes are outlined as below:

1. Malt extract, squeezed powder, yeast, lactic acid (food grade), ascorbic acid (food grade), calcium propionate (food grade), sodium metabisulfite (food grade), and potassium metabisulfite (food grade) have been approved as food additives for cereal products, and their hygienic requirements, contaminants, toxins, residues as well as the packaging and labeling requirements have been stipulated.

2. The microorganism requirements for cereals, beans and their products have been added, which are shown in the following table:
