From January 27, 2026, Taiwan requires novel food ingredients, particularly those derived from genetically modified microorganisms (GMMs), to undergo a formal safety assessment with dedicated, detailed documentation before they can be approved for use.
On January 27, 2026, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) announced the establishment of the Principles for Safety Assessment of Novel Food Ingredients (hereinafter the "Principles"). The new Principles provide a comprehensive framework and standardized procedure for the evaluation and approval of food ingredients that do not have a history of safe consumption in Taiwan. The regulation became effective immediately upon its announcement.
