[Updated] Japan Food Additives Updates in 2026

On April 7, 2026, Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) issued Announcement No.140, formally finalizing the revised use standards for the designated additives Zinc Gluconate and Sulfites. The update entered into force on the same day.

Japan regulates food additives through a positive list system. These designated additives are clearly defined in terms of their specifications, conditions of use, maximum usage levels, and applicable food categories, providing companies with a clear reference for determining whether a specific additive can be used in a given product.
