On November 8, 2024, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued the updated Commodity Specification for Frozen Fruit Juices (hereinafter the "Specification"), which has been implemented as of the release date. As revealed by the Specification, the packing season, shipment, labeling and apple juice's Individual standard were revised.
Packing Season
All fresh fruit used to make frozen fruit juices must be from the current crop year, unless specified otherwise in the Solicitation/IFB. For instance, if fresh apples are harvested from August to October 2024, any product made from these apples delivered from August 2024 to July 2025 is considered from the 2024 crop year.
Shipment
Frozen juices must be stored, tendered, and transported at a temperature of 0 degrees Fahrenheit (F) or lower. Any load received that exceeds this temperature may be rejected by the recipient.
Individual Commodity Specifications
Apple Juice in Individual Serving Sizes: Product may be made from concentrate or pasteurized single strength juice (Not From Concentrate (NFC))
For such product, the below specifications shall be followed:
Grade: U.S. Grade A as specified in the United States Standards for Grades of Canned Apple Juice.
Style I, Clear - typical of clarified apple juice.
Vitamin C Requirement: The finished product shall be fortified (if needed) to contain at least 30 milligrams of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) per 100 milliliters of apple juice. (Label indications of Vitamin C fortification are required).
Brix: Minimum 11.0 degrees.
Primary Container Size: 4-fluid ounce individual serving cups.
Count per Case: 96 cups per case.
Net Weight (cases): 24 pounds per case.
Shelf Life: No more than 6 months if kept frozen at zero degrees or lower, 10 days after thawing.
