Indonesia Amends Processed Food Labeling Regulation Due to BPA Risk

Recently, Indonesia BPOM released the Second Amendment to BPOM Regulation No. 31 of 2018 on Processed Food Labels, which came into effect on April 5, 2024. However, BPOM provides a four-year grace period for stakeholders to ensure compliance with the new requirements. As per the second amendment, due to the risks associated with Bisphenol A (BPA) in bottled drinking water, BPOM has reinforced the labeling requirements for bottled drinking water.

Canada Updates Guidance on Front-of-Package (FOP) Nutrition Labeling

On May 16, 2023, Health Canada released an updated guidance document to help stakeholders in complying with the FOP nutrition labeling requirements which will be implemented from January 1, 2026. However, products imported to or manufactured in Canada, or packaged at retail before the implementation date can remain in the warehouse and continue to be sold on shelves.

Canada Amends the Food and Drug Regulations

On July 20, 2022, Canada published the Canada Gazette, Part II, involving the amendments to the Food and Drug Regulations (Nutrition Symbols, Other Labelling Provisions, Vitamin D and Hydrogenated Fats or Oils) (SOR/2022-168) and the Food and Drug Regulations and the Cannabis Regulations (Supplemented Foods) (SOR/2022-169), which came into effect immediately after the promulgation.

Canada Mandates Food Front-of-package Nutrition Labeling

On June 30, 2022, Health Canada introduced new nutrition labelling regulations for packaged foods, which require to indicate a symbol on the front of packages (FOP) indicating if a food is high in saturated fat, sugars and/or sodium. The regulations will come into effect on July 20, 2022. A grace period will be given for the industry to make changes until January 1, 2026.

Indonesia Unveils New Halal Label Logo

On March 13, 2022, Indonesia Halal Product Guarantee Agency (BPJPH) announced to set a new halal label logo, which is stipulated in BPJPH Number 40 of 2022 regarding the Determination of Halal Labels, as an implementation of the mandate of Article 37 of Law Number 33 of 2014. The new halal logo has been applied nationally and must be shown on the product packaging as a sign of product halalness from March 1, 2022.
