China

On April 22, Hong Kong SAR officially implemented the first-phase disposable plastic tableware regulation, under the Product Eco-responsibility (Amendment) Bill 2023 of regulating disposable plastic tableware and other plastic products. Regarding the regulation on disposable plastic tableware, the Amendment Bill bans the local sale of nine types of disposable plastic tableware, and prohibits catering premises from providing customers with such products, and is implemented in two phases. The first-phase regulation took effect on April 22, 2024. The second-phase implementation is tentatively set for 2025, and will depend on the availability and affordability of the relevant non-plastic and reusable alternatives. (Read More)

Japan

On April 10, 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF) issued a notice announcing the revision of the "Japanese Agricultural Standards of Boiled and Dried Small Fishes." The updated standards introduce new "reference specifications," provide more detailed definitions for various products, and update the testing methods. As revealed by a WTO Notification on April 26, 2024, Malaysia is consulting on the revisions to Food Regulation 1985 regarding milk and milk production regulations. On April 4, 2024, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued an order that extends the transition period for the registration of foreign food manufacturing facilities (FFMF). United States (US)

On April 3, 2024, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a draft guidance for the dietary supplement industry titled "New Dietary Ingredient Notification Master Files for Dietary Supplements." This guidance provides recommendations on using Master Files to submit NDI-related information to the FDA for evaluating the new dietary ingredient notifications (NDINs). The authority proposed to update the guideline to facilitate industry compliance with the NDIN requirement by offering guidance on content, submission, and use of Master Files. Canada 

On April 20, 2024, the Canada Department of the Environment published a notice under subsection 46(1) of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, requiring comprehensive reporting from entities involved in the manufacturing or management of plastic resins and certain plastic products to the Federal Plastics Registry.
