WTO Circulates Indonesian Decree on Materials Exempted from Mandatory Halal Certification

WTO circulated Indonesian Decree on Materials Excluded from Halal Certification Obligation. Materials in the Decree do not require halal certification, including: 1) Materials derived from nature without any further process or physical process or addition of any auxiliary substances, additives, or other substances; 2) Materials without risk of containing or being contaminated by haram substances; 3) Non-dangerous materials without containing haram substances.

[Updated] Indonesia Amends the Maximum Limit of Heavy Metal Contaminants in Processed Food

As revealed by the WTO notification G/SPS/N/IDN/142 on February 3, 2022, Indonesia Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) announced to solicit comments from WTO members for Draft Regulation on Heavy Metals Contaminants Requirements in Processed Food until April 4, 2022. Once the amendment passes review, the current regulation (Indonesia Food and Drug Administration No. 5 regulation on the maximum level of heavy metal contaminants in processed food in 2018) will be replaced and repealed.

Indonesia Unveils New Halal Label Logo

On March 13, 2022, Indonesia Halal Product Guarantee Agency (BPJPH) announced to set a new halal label logo, which is stipulated in BPJPH Number 40 of 2022 regarding the Determination of Halal Labels, as an implementation of the mandate of Article 37 of Law Number 33 of 2014. The new halal logo has been applied nationally and must be shown on the product packaging as a sign of product halalness from March 1, 2022.

Indonesia Regulates Claims on Processed Food Labels and Advertisements

On January 4, 2022, Indonesia Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) enacted Regulation of the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency Number 1 of 2022 concerning Supervision of Claims on Processed Food Labels and Advertisements, with the purpose of updating the current regulation. This regulation came into effect immediately after BPOM's announcement with a 30-month grace period.
