[Updated] Japan Revises the Drug/Non-drug List for Food Ingredients

On December 19, 2022, Japan released an amendment to the Directory Distinguishing Food and Drug Ingredients. According to the amendment, MHLW further enriched the contents of the drug list (ingredients exclusively used as drugs). The changes came into effect on the date of promulgation.

Hong Kong to Ban CBD Products in February 2023

In June 2022, Hong Kong Security Bureau submitted a paper to the Hong Kong Legislative Council, proposing to list CBD under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance. 1 Following that, on October 26, 2022, the Hong Kong government submitted the amendments to the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance and Control of Chemicals Ordinance to the Legislative Council, including the legislative control of CBD under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance.

Australia and New Zealand Approve the Use of 2′-FL Combined with GOS and/or ITF in Infant Formula Products

On December 19, 2022, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) announced the approval of Application A1251, which permitted the combination of 2′-fucosyllactose (2′-FL) with galactooligosaccharides (GOS) and/or inulin-type fructans (ITF) as ingredients in infant formula products.

Japan Revises the Drug/Non-drug List for Food Ingredients

According to the Latest revision, Japan announced to revise the Directory Distinguishing Food and Drug Ingredients (hereinafter “the Directory”). As revealed by the revision, six ingredients have been newly added into the Directory, two of them can be used as common food ingredients as long as they do not claim medicinal efficacy. Besides, the alias of one ingredient in both lists was revised.

Philippines Revises Guidelines for Prepackaged Processed Food Products Containing Trans-Fatty Acids (TFA)

On October 27, 2022, the Philippines FDA announced to amend FDA Circular 2021-028 entitled Guidelines for Prepackaged Processed Food Products Containing Trans-Fatty Acids (TFA). The Circular aims to eliminate the industrially-produced Trans-Fatty Acids (TFA) in the Philippines food supply chain by 18 June 2023.

China Releases 18 GB Standard Drafts on Food Additives, Including GB 2760

On September 8, the Department of Food Safety Standards, Risk Surveillance and Assessment under the China National Health Commission (NHC) unveiled the exposure drafts of 18 national food safety standards on food additives, which include six newly established standards, nine newly revised standards, and three amendment sheets. These drafts are available for public comments prior to October 10, 2022.
