China Approves Three Bacterial Cultures in Foods

On Jun. 8, 2016, China NHFPC announced the approval of lactobacillus fermentum and bifidobacterium breve used in baby foods, and also approved the use of bacillus coagulans in conventional foods.

Three bacterial cultures have been approved in foods in China, i.e. Lactobacillus fermentum, bifidobacterium breve, and bacillus coagulans.

On Jun. 8, 2016, China NHFPC announced the approval of lactobacillus fermentum and bifidobacterium breve used in baby foods, and also approved the use of bacillus coagulans in conventional foods.

Lactobacillus fermentum and bifidobacterium breve had been listed in the “Bacterial Cultures Permitted in Foods” from 2011. As these two bacterial cultures have been widely applied in baby foods in many countries all over the world, this time it is approved to be used in baby foods as well as infant formula in China.

Bacillus coagulans is mainly approved for application in the production and processing of beverages, baked foods, baking mixtures, breakfast cereals, and candies.
