At the end of Dec. 2020, China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment consulted on a new food raw material Haematococcus pluvialis oil and two new food additives (protease and phosphoinositide phospholipase C).
Comments on the food additives should be sent to zqyj@cfsa.net.cn before Jan. 16, 2021.

New Food Raw Material
Name | Haematococcus pluvialis oil |
Origin | Haematococcus pluvialis |
Recommended consumption | ≤240 mg/day |
Quality requirements | Character: crimson oily liquid |
Total astaxanthin content ≥5%
All-trans astaxanthin content ≥70%
Notes | 1. Application scope does not include infant foods. 2. Refer to relevant regulation of plant oil for food safety indicators of this product. Microcystic toxins (LR, RR, YR)<1 μg/kg. |
Haematococcus pluvialis oil is produced with Haematococcus pluvialis through wall-breaking of the microalgae and the extraction from it. Its major active constituent is astaxanthin. In 2010, China approved Haematococcus pluvialis as a new food raw material. Application scope and recommended consumption amount of the Haematococcus pluvialis oil currently under consultation is the same as that of the approved Haematococcus pluvialis (calculated as total astaxanthin). Since there isn't adequate proof to certify the safety of applying Haematococcus pluvialis oil in infant foods, the application scope does not include infant foods.
New Food Additives
The two new food additives under consultation are both enzymes.
Enzyme | Origin | Donor |
Protease | Bacillus subtilis | Bacillus amyloliquefaciens |
Phosphoinositide phospholipase C | Pseudomonas fluorescens | Microorganism separated from soil and coded with the gene of phosphoinositide phospholipase C |
The protease is used as enzyme preparation in food industry to hydrolyze protein. Phosphoinositide phospholipase C is used as enzyme preparation in food industry to degum edible plant oil and fat. The quality standard of both enzyme preparations should comply with GB 1886.174-2016 National Food Safety Standard - Food Additive - Enzymes for Food Industry.
