China Customs Rejected 198 Batches of Imported Food in October 2024

On November 22, 2024, General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) published the list of non-compliant food products in October 2024. A total of 198 batches of imported food from 28 countries/regions were rejected.

Most non-compliant imported food in October came from the U.S. (14.6%, mostly beer products), followed by Canada (10.6%, all sports nutrition products), and Japan (9.6%, mostly beer products). The major reasons for import rejections were as follows:

  • Unqualified labeling (32.3%)

  • Discrepancy between cargo and certificate (21.2%)

  • Incompliance with food national standards (19.7%)

  • Issues regarding overseas manufacturer registration (11.1%)

  • Detection of animal epidemic diseases (7.6%)

Noteworthy Products

1. Sports nutrition

20 batches of sports nutrition products from Canada failed customs clearance in October. All batches were rejected for unqualified labeling. Unlike common prepackaged foods, sports nutrition products shall meet the labeling requirements stated in GB 13432-2013 Labeling of Prepackaged Foods for Special Dietary Uses and GB 24154-2015 General Standard for Sports Nutrition Food.

2. Baby food

Two batches of baby foods from Thailand were rejected due to unqualified labeling.  For labeling requirements for baby food in the Chinese market, please refer to GB 10769-2010 Cereal-based Complementary Foods for Infants and Young Children and GB 10770-2010 Canned Complementary Foods for Infants and Young Children.
