China Customs Rejected 250 Batches of Imported Food in March 2024

On April 28, 2024, General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) published the list of non-compliant food products in March 2024. A total of 250 batches of imported food from 34 countries/regions were rejected.

Most non-compliant imported food in March came from the U.S. (12.8%, mostly beer products), followed by Ecuador (10.0%, all aquatic products) and Spain (8.8%, mostly wine products). The major reasons for import rejections were as follows:

  • Unqualified labeling (23.6%)

  • Discrepancy between cargo and certificate (19.2%)

  • Excessive use of food additives/nutritional fortification substances (18.4%)

  • Lack of inspection & quarantine permit (9.2%)

  • Lack of required documents or evidential materials (7.2%)

Noteworthy Products

1. Dairy products

Three batches of dairy products were rejected by China customs in March. Among them, two batches of yogurt from Turkey failed for excessive shelf life, and one batch of whey protein powder from the U.S. was rejected due to the improper use of nutritional enhancers.

2. Miscellaneous products

Under the classification system of China customs, miscellaneous products encompass a wide range of diverse food products. Due to the heterogeneous nature of this category, it often faces various compliance challenges, resulting in an increased risk of customs rejections. In March, the majority of miscellaneous products can be categorized as health supplements, solid beverages, and condiments.
