China is overhauling the registration rules for health foods that use animal-derived and plant-derived raw materials, replacing the long-standing trial provisions with a more detailed compliance framework. The new drafts set out clearer source, documentation, and traceability requirements for permitted raw materials while expressly banning or restricting ingredients linked to protected wild animals and plants, including imported CITES-listed species.
On July 24, 2026, China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) released two draft regulations to standardize the registration management of health foods containing animal and plant-derived ingredients, aligning product safety with national wildlife protection standards. The public consultation period is open until August 24, 2026.
