China Opens One Bacterial Strain for Baby Foods and Ten New Varieties of Food Additives to Public Feedback

China intends to expand the application scope of Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM to foods for infants under 1 year old.

On Feb. 18, 2021, CFSA (China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment) released two notices to consult on the use of one food raw material1 and ten new varieties of food additives2.

One food raw material: bacterial strain with expanded application scope

Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM was first approved to be used in baby foods in 20113, but it is limited to be used in foods for babies over 1 year old. The notice this time aims to expand the application scope of Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM to foods for infants under 1 year old. 

Up until now, the following bacterial strains have got the approval to be used in baby foods.
