- China has temporarily suspended all meat importation from Brazil due to a recent tainted meat scandal. The registration information of Brazilian meat manufacturers has been updated by CNCA to reflect recent safety and quality violations.
It was revealed by Brazilian police recently that major meat producers bribed health inspectors to certify tainted meat as fit for consumption. Two globally renowned meat suppliers BRF and JBS are also involved in this scandal. Brazil is the world’s largest beef and poultry exporter, and its main markets include China, Singapore and Japan.
The export volume of Brazilian meat in 2016 totaled USD 13.9 billion, nearly one third of which was exported to China. The Chinese government also announced the suspension of all meat other Brazilian meant imports.
The manufacturers of meat products wishing to sell in Chinese markets are required to register with CNCA in advance. CNCA updated the registration information of 9 Brazilian meat manufacturers on Mar. 21, 2017. 4 manufacturers have been suspended for exporting tainted meat to China, and 5 other manufacturers will temporarily suspended until Sep. 23, 2017.
