More Single Product Standards for FSMP are on the Agenda

It is noteworthy that 5 FSMP product standards are included in the plan. At the May 8th seminar on special food regulations, an official of CFSA (Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment) Liang Dong pointed to the direction of FSMP standard system: Currently effective standards are GB 25596-2010[11] and GB 29922-2013[12] which are general rules for all types of FSMP instead of nutrition for patients suffering from specific disease. China is formulating single product standards for each type of FSMP. Some have been under formulation or publicized for public opinion (see table below, second column).

n Current Situation of FSMP Standards

  • GB 29922-2013 General Rules for FSMP (> 1 year-old)

  • Nutritionally complete formula for diabetes

  • Nutritionally complete formula for tumors

  • Nutritionally complete formula for nephropathy

  • Nutritionally complete formula for inflammatory bowel disease

  • Nutritionally complete formula for trauma, infection, surgery and other stress status

  • Nutritional Supplementary Food for Moderate and Severe Malnutrition

  • Nutritional Supplementary Food for Tuberculosis Patients

  • Nutritionally Complete Formula Food for Intractable Epilepsy

  • High-energy formula

  • Protein formula

  • Fat metabolism disorder formula

  • Medium chain triglycerides

Liang also disclosed that an additional 6 categories of FSMP would be added but corresponding single product standards will not likely be put on agenda in 2019 (see table above, column 4).

Apart from these, standards for the specification of some food additives such as GOS, ARA and DHA, and GB 13432 Standard for the Labeling of Food for Special Dietary Uses are proposed to be revised.
