EU Drafts Maximum Levels for Furan and Methylfurans in Baby Foods

1. The EU has proposed amendments to Regulation (EU) 2023/915 to set strict maximum levels for the sum of furan, 2-methylfuran and 3-methylfuran in processed cereal-based foods for infants and young children, and in various categories of baby food, with application from January 1, 2028. 2. Different maximum levels are established for processed cereal-based foods, dairy/fruit-based baby foods (including mixed dairy-fruit products), and other baby foods, using specific calculation rules for the sum of furan and its methyl derivatives. 3. Manufacturers and exporters serving the EU baby food market must review thermal processing, strengthen quality control and testing for these contaminants, and prepare for compliance within the transitional period before the new limits take effect.

On March 27, 2026, the European Union released a draft regulation amending Regulation (EU) 2023/915 to establish maximum levels for the sum of furan, 2-methylfuran, and 3-methylfuran in processed cereal-based food for infants and young children, as well as baby food. Prompted by public health concerns identified by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and multiple Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) notifications, this draft aims to strictly control these thermal processing contaminants. The deadline for submitting comments on this draft is May 26, 2026, and the new rules are proposed to apply starting January 1, 2028.
