1. The EU has notified a draft amendment to Regulation (EU) 2023/915 to set new maximum levels for 3-MCPD, its esters, and glycidyl esters in baby food and processed cereal-based food, and to tighten limits for oils and fats used in their production.
2. New and reduced limits will apply to vegetable and marine oils destined for infant and young children foods, with explicit coverage of refined olive oil and inclusion of 3-MBPD and 3-MIPD within glycidyl ester controls.
3. From January 1, 2027, manufacturers of baby food, infant formula, FSMP, and compound foods with added fats must ensure sourcing, formulations, processing, and testing comply with the stricter contaminant limits.
On March 27, 2026, the European Union released a notification via the WTO, proposing to amend Regulation (EU) 2023/915 regarding the maximum levels of 3-monochloropropanediol (3-MCPD), 3-MCPD fatty acid esters, and glycidyl fatty acid esters in specific foods. The deadline for public comments is May 26, 2026, and the proposed regulation is expected to apply from January 1, 2027.
