FSSAI Mandates Quarterly Reporting on Rejected and Expired Food Items

On December 31, 2024, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) introduced a new provision under its Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS). All FSSAI-licensed food manufacturers, including repackers, relabelers, and importers, must now submit quarterly reports detailing the following information:

  • Quantity of Rejected Food Items: Data on food products that failed to meet quality standards during internal testing or inspections and were rejected for sale into market.

  • Quantity of Expired Products: Information on expired food products or those returned from the supply chain due to expiry or other quality issues.

  • Action Taken with Rejected/Expired Items: A detailed record of how such items were managed, including quantities destroyed, auctioned, or repurposed, along with details of buyers or waste disposal agencies involved.
