1. Germany’s BMLEH issued revised 2026 guidelines for wine‑like, semi‑sparkling wine‑like, and sparkling wine‑like beverages, effective immediately with no transition period.
2. The update expands product classifications (including defined cider categories), modernizes permitted processing aids (including plant proteins and sweeteners), and refines rules for alcohol‑free and dealcoholized claims.
3. Stricter labeling and advertising requirements now apply, especially for flavorings and the use of the term “wine,” which is restricted to compound words to avoid confusion with traditional grape wine.
On March 2, 2026, the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity (BMLEH) published the newly revised Guidelines for Wine-Like, Semi-Sparkling Wine-Like, and Sparkling Wine-Like Beverages1 in the Federal Gazette. This major revision updates the previous 2015 version2 by expanding product classifications, modernizing manufacturing standards, and introducing stricter labeling rules for flavorings and alcohol-free claims. As no transition period is specified in the document, the new guidelines took effect immediately upon publication.
