GMO Products Included in Non-compliant Imported Food Products in August

Virgin rapeseed oils were rejected because they contain unlabeled and unpermitted GM ingredients.

On Sep 16th, 2020, China GAC released the list of non-compliant  food products in Aug, 2020[1] A total of 206 batches of imported food from 39 countries/regions were rejected in August.

The largest part (19.9%) of non-compliant food products in August originated from Japan, followed by Russia (11.6%) and Ecuador (7.2%). The highest proportion of rejections were the lack of required documentation (15.5%) and discrepancy between cargo and certificate (15.5%). Major categories of rejected food products were meat products and aquatic products, accounting for 27.1% and 16.5% respectively, followed by alcohol and beverages (15%), which include coffee, tea, alcoholic beverages and solid beverages.

Dairy Products

Among non-compliant food products in August, one batch of high-calcium milk tablet from Australia was rejected for overuse of the food additive silicon dioxide, one batch of whey powder from Russia failed for not obtaining access upon inspection and quarantine, and one batch of skimmed milk from Italy was rejected for lack of required documentation.

GMO Products

Twelve batches of virgin rapeseed oil from Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus failed custom clearance due to unlabeled and unpermitted GM ingredients. Nine GM ingredients were involved: FMV35S, NPTII, GOX, pFMV35S, tE9, CTP2-CP4-EPSPS, pCaMV35S, tNOS, and CP4-EPSPS.

According to Agricultural GMO Safety Certificate (Import) Approval List, 51 kinds of GM ingredients are allowed for importation by now. Labeling method of GMO products should follow Measures for Agricultural GMO Labeling Administration.

  • GM plants, animals, microorganism and their products etc., shall be directly labeled "genetically modified XX".

  • Products made directly from GMOs shall be labeled "genetically modified XX products" or "with XX as raw materials".

  • Products made from GMOs or materials with GM ingredients that no longer contain GM ingredients or the GM ingredients cannot be detected in the final products for sales shall be labeled "This product is made from genetically modified XX, but the product no longer contains genetically modified ingredients" or "This product uses genetically modified XX as raw materials, but the product no longer contains genetically modified ingredients".

Nestlé and Quaker

Three batches of Nestlé coco products were rejected for unqualified labeling and exceeding shelf life. One batch of Quaker oatmeal was also rejected for unqualified labeling.
