Hong Kong Bans the Import of Poultry Products from Parts of USA and Bhutan

On 17 Apr 2015, Hong Kong CFS (the Center for Food Safety) announced to ban the import of poultry meat and their products (including poultry eggs) from the following five areas located in the United State and Bhutan due to the outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza and H5N1:

  1. Roseau County in the US state of Minnesota;

  2. Otter Tail County in the US state of Minnesota;

  3. Barron County in the US state of Wisconsin;

  4. Roberts County in the US state of South Dakota;

  5. Thimphu District, Bhutan

A CFS spokesman said that Hong Kong imported about 267 000 tonnes of chilled and frozen poultry meat and about 530 million poultry eggs from the US last year. However, no poultry meat or poultry eggs were imported from Bhutan in the same period.
"The CFS has contacted the US and Bhutan authorities concerned over the issues and will closely monitor information issued by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on avian influenza outbreaks in the two countries. Appropriate action will be taken in response to the development of the situation," the spokesman said.
