India Amends Food Contaminant Limits and Additive Standards

India has tightened contaminant and residue controls by adding or refining maximum limits for heavy metals, aflatoxins, saffrole, and veterinary drug residues across specific food categories. India has also introduced draft standards for minor seed oils and edible seeds, including compositional limits, extraction requirements, and a new food additive allowance for grape wines.

In May 2026, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) officially released the finalized Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Amendment Regulations, 2026, covering heavy metals, natural toxins, and veterinary drug residues in various food products. These mandatory regulations will take effect on December 1, 2026. Concurrently, FSSAI launched a public consultation on the draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2026, concerning minor seed oils and edible seeds, with comments due by July 25, 2026.
