On September 1, 2022, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) published a gazette notification of the Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) First Amendment Regulations, 2022. The revision mainly involves infant formula and follow-up formula requirements, which will come into effect on October 1, 2022.
Major revisions:
1. The Vitamin B12 content is modified in infant formula and follow-up formula.

2. The authority defines “Infant Milk Food”.
The product will be named as “Infant Milk Food” if an infant formula in powder form is manufactured without the use of any vegetable oil, linoleate, vitamin E, starch, specified food additive or optional ingredients.
3. Carbon dioxide and nitrogen are added as food additives for the follow-up formula.
Two packaging gases are added to the table of food additives for the follow-up formula, which are carbon dioxide (INS No. 290) and nitrogen (INS No. 941). The recommended maximum level per 100 ml of both gases in product ready for consumption should conform to Good Manufacturing Practice regulations (GMP).
