Japan to Amend Dairy Aflatoxin Limit

On July 23, 2015, Japan MHLW released an announcement detailing the new limits of Aflatoxin M1 in dairy products, which will be effective from Jan. 23, 2016.

The previous maximum allowable total Aflatoxin (the sum of Aflatoxin B1, B2, G1 and G2) in foods was 10μg/kg as articulated within the Food Sanitation Act. The newly established upper limit of Aflatoxin M1 in dairy products has been reduced to just 0.5μg/kg. Dairy products mentioned here include raw milk, cow milk, special cow's milk, raw goat milk, sterilized goat milk, raw sheep milk, ingredients adjusted milk, low fat milk, fat free milk, and processed milk.
