On Aug. 25, 2016, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan (MHLW) announced the revision of “Enforcement Ordinance of Food Sanitation Law” and the “Standards and Specifications for Foods and Food Additives”, which approves five new food additives and establishes relevant standards and specifications with immediate effect.
Relevant details are as below:
- Peracetic acid, 1-hydroxyethylidene-1, 1-diphosphonic acid, and octanoic acid have been approved as new food additives, and relevant standards and specifications have been established.
- The existing standard for the use of sodium chlorite has revised. Usage scope is expanded to include edible meat and meat products. The maximum limit is 0.50-1.20g/kg used as a dipping or spraying solution.
- Hypobromous acid water has been designated as a food additive which is only permitted for surface disinfection of edible meat, and its maximum limit is 0.90g for edible meat (excluding poultry) and 0.45g for poultry.
