Japan Proposes Amendments to Seafood Naming Guidelines

On February 7, 2025, Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) released a draft amendment to the Guidelines for Fish and Shellfish Names under the Food Labeling Standard Q&A. Public comments will be accepted until March 10, 2025.

When labeling seafood from overseas fishing grounds or non-native species, enterprises must ensure that the names used do not mislead consumers into believing the products are taxonomically related to high-value fish.

The amendment establishes standardized names for over 20 species of overseas cephalopods, including Sepia brevimana, to ensure clear and accurate labeling.

Additionally, for imported seafood, the Food Labeling Standards require that both the "name" and the "country of origin" (with an optional indication of the production waters) must be clearly displayed on the label.
