Japan Revises the Maximum Residue Limit of 5 Pesticides and Veterinary Drug in Food

Maximum residue limits of pesticides and veterinary drugs have become stricter in Japan.

On July 19, 2017, Japan MHLW released an announcement detailing the revision of 5 pesticides and veterinary drugs including famoxadone, which was followed by NO.3 announcement on July 18. The latest announcement stipulates new MRLs for isofetamido, megestrol acetate, famoxadone, fenazaquin, and metamifop.

In general, the MRLs became much stricter for pesticides and veterinary drug and only the limit of famoxadone in broccoli increased. Most of them did not have MRLs previously while in this latest revision 4 of 5 pesticides and veterinary drug have newly set maximum residue limit; moreover, megestrol acetate has been assigned an extremely low acceptable concentration in food. As for the date of implementation, pesticides and veterinary drug with stricter limit are subject to a transitional period and the requirements will become effective from January 19, 2018, while those with higher limits, have already been implemented since July 19, 2017.
