Korea to Revise Labeling Requirements for Nutrient Reference Value

On Jun. 16, 2016, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety of Korea (MFDS) preannounced the revision of “Food Labeling Standard”, which mainly amends the daily nutrient reference value on food labels. The period for public consultation is until Jul. 5, 2016.

The revision of nutrient reference value includes sugar, carbohydrate, fat, vitamin D, chromium, etc.

Set as 100g (the NRV % should be labeled)

Carbohydrate

Decrease from 330g to 324g

Fat

Increase from 51g to 54g

vitamin D

Increase from 5μg to 10μg

Chromium

Decrease from 50μg to 30μg

For foods targeted at special groups of people including infants, young children, pregnant women and lactating women, the recommended nutrient intake or adequate nutrient intake should be labeled as the reference value.
