MHLW Implements New Requirements for Two Designated Additives

Calcium Phytate is regulated as a new designated additive, which is only allowed to be used in grape wine with a maximum limit of 0.08g/L. Cupric Sulfate can be used in wine from July 26, 2023.

On July 26, 2023, Japan MHLW issued an amendment to Specifications and Standards for Food Additives. According to the amendment, Japan added Calcium Phytate as a new designated additive, and revised the scope of application for another designated food additive named Cupric Sulfate. The changes came into effect immediately.

Calcium phytate:

As a new designated additive, it is required only be used in grape wine, and the usage amount shall not exceed 0.08g per 1 liter of grape wine. Correspondingly, the Food Labeling Standards has newly added the simplified name "phytic acid Ca" for labeling purposes.

Cupric sulfate:

As revealed by Specifications and Standards for Food Additives, cupric sulfate must not be used in any food other than infant formula. Moreover, infant formula prepared at a standard dilution level must not contain more than 0.60mg of copper per 1 liter, except when approved by the MHLW.

With the release of new amendment, cupric sulfate can also be used in grape wine with a maximum usage amount of 10mg per 1 liter of grape wine as cupric sulfate pentahydrate, and the residual amount of copper shall not exceed 2mg per 1 liter of grape wine.
