The draft of “Administrative Measures for Shanghai Food Safety Information Traceability” will be formally implemented from Oct. 1, 2015. The system requires implementation of a mandatory traceability system for ten categories of food products, including:

  • Grain and grain products

  • Livestock and its products

  • Poultry

  • Vegetables

  • Fruits

  • Dairy products

  • Cooking oil

  • Aquatic products

  • Wine

  • Other categories of foods approved by Shanghai People’s Government

Vice director of Shanghai food and drug administration department Gu Zhenhua indicated that four categories of foods including rice, livestock, live poultry, and vegetables will be the first batch of food required to implement a traceability system in Shanghai, which will be open to all consumers. Other categories of foods will also be traceable gradually in the next two to three years.
