On July 12, 2024, Taiwan’s agricultural department proposed draft amendments to Article 2, 4 and 5 of the Standards for Types and Tolerance Levels of Pathogenic Microorganisms and Health-hazard Materials in Pet Food. Any comments can be submitted within 60 days following the announcement date.
According to the department, due to the high temperature and humidity in Taiwan, mycotoxins may contaminate raw materials, and cause hazards during harvesting, processing, transportation, and storage. To ensure stringent protection of pet food safety, the department introduces safety tolerance levels for five additional mycotoxins in pet food, aside from aflatoxin. Additionally, the safety tolerance level for mercury is lowered.
Details of draft amendments are as follows:
1. Introducing safety tolerance levels for five additional mycotoxins in pet food
Mycotoxin | Maximum content |
Vomitoxin | 2 ppm(in dog food) |
5 ppm(in cat food) | |
Fumonisin | 5 ppm |
Zearalenone | 0.2 ppm |
Ochratoxin | 0.01 ppm |
T-2 mycotoxin | 0.05 ppm(in cat food) |
Notes: The content unit is standardized to ppm, which refers to milligrams per kilogram.
2. Reducing the maximum mercury content in pet food to 0.3 ppm from the current maximum of 0.4 ppm
