During the Second Global Cross-Border E-Commerce Summit (October 27, 2017), Alibaba released safety standards for food and health food traded on Tmall Global. The standard was jointly formulated by Tmall Global and China National Institute of Standardization.
The internal standard is primarily based on Chinese national standards, however food safety standards in multiple countries have also been referred to. Some of the requirements in the new internal standard are stricter than both national and international standards. For example, China stipulates that content of benzopyrene in oil shall be less than 10ug/kg, while the maximum limit set by Tmall is 3ug/kg. There is no limit standard of acid value in nuts in some foreign countries, but Tmall sets 3.0mg/g as the maximum limit. Once products are inspected and found non-compliant, Tmall Global will work with National Monitoring Center to stop sale of these products, ask companies to recall and even destroy them.
