Tmall Global Releases Supplementary Requirements of CBEC Infant Formula and Complementary Foods for Infants

In principle, Tmall Global will adopt the Chinese test methods to evaluate food safety. However in the case that the technical regulations of source import country differs and it might not comply with Chinese requirements, the regulation of the source country will be adopted as the test methods.

On Oct 26, 2020 Tmall Global issued two notifications to supplement the requirements of CBEC infant formula and complementary foods for infants in order to better guarantee its safety and quality. During the practice, these two notifications shall be used together with “Technical specifications of CBEC prepackaged food — General requirements” released by Tmall Global in March 2020.

Here are the main contents of the two notifications:

Additional Safety Requirements of CBEC Infant Formula (Tmall Notification)

  • Raw material and food additive:

Glutenin should not be contained in the food ingredients of infant formula. Hydrogenated oils and irradiated ingredients should not be used during the production of infant formula.

2. Canned complementary foods for infants

Bones and other materials which are not suitable for infant and young children shall be removed from raw materials of livestock, poultry and fish; Crude fiber shall be removed from raw materials of plant origins when necessary. For raw materials of fruits and vegetables, high quality materials or their products free of decay and deterioration should be used. For raw materials of carcass, poultry and fish, fresh/frozen raw materials and processed products of high quality should be used

Principle and Requirements of Testing

  • In principle, Tmall Global will adopt the Chinese test methods to evaluate food safety. However in the case that the technical regulations of source import country differs and it might not comply with Chinese requirements, the regulation of the source country will be adopted as the test methods.

  • If the requirement regulated in China’s mandatory standards is stricter than the regulation in the source country, the evaluation result should be determined based on China’s mandatory standards.
