Indonesia to Update the list of Permitted Nutrients in Health Supplements with Restrictions

On April 3, 2024, Indonesia BPOM revealed a drafted amendment to BPOM Regulation No.32 of 2022 on Criteria and Administration of Health Supplement Registration. The proposed amendment mainly revises the list of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other ingredients permitted for use in health supplements with restrictions in Annex VII. The revisions will impact the usage of Selenium and Zinc, which are vital nutrients for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Indonesia Sets New Safety and Quality Requirements for Health Supplements

On September 18, 2023, Indonesia Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) released BPOM Regulation No. 24 of 2023 on Safety and Quality Requirements for Health Supplements, which came into force immediately after its promulgation, repealing BPOM Regulation No. 17 of 2019 on Health Supplement Quality Requirements. The new regulation specifies general requirements for the safety and quality of health supplements in the main body, and sets more detailed requirements in the appendixes.

On December 26, 2022, Indonesia Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) unveiled Criteria and Administration of Health Supplement Registration, which stipulated the registration requirements for and procedures of locally-produced, imported and exported health supplements. It replaced the previous 2020 version, and came into force immediately after its promulgation. Notably, BPOM provided a two-year transition period for stakeholders to adopt the changes. During the transition period, current circulation licenses remain valid.
