76 Batches of Imported Food Rejected in February 2020

According to GAC data, unqualified labelling was the leading reason for imported food being rejected by China GAC during customs inspections in Feb, 2020. The second most frequent reason for rejection was detection of animal epidemic diseases. The third most common reason was failure to provide necessary documentation.

On Apr. 10th, China GAC released the list of non-compliant food products in February, 2020.[1] A total number of 76 batches of food from 15 different countries and regions were rejected.

Origin

32% of the rejected food products originated from the USA. Among these products, 96% are alcohol products. The next two main origin countries are Ecuador and Japan.

Category

Alcohol and aquatic products accounted for more than half of rejected food products. One batch of sweetened condensed milk was rejected for not obtaining pre-clearance quarantine access. Three batches of milk paste products (used to produce ice cream) was rejected due to use of non-compliant food additives.

Reasons for Rejections

Labeling issues were the leading reason for rejection by customs officials (38%), followed by animal epidemic disease detected (16%) and a lack of required documentation. (15%).
