ASEAN Launches Guidelines on Food Marketing to Protect Future Generation

On March 18, 2024, ASEAN Health Ministries officially launched ASEAN Minimum Standards and Guidelines on Actions to Protect Children from the Harmful Impact of Marketing of Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages (hereafter as the Guidelines) during a virtual meeting. The Guidelines mainly proposed 12 recommendations for regulating the marketing of food and non-alcoholic beverages, aiming to protect the future generation among ASEAN members.

Japan Releases Requirements for Food Utensils and Packaging Manufacturers

On March 28, 2024, Japan’s MHLW newly issued the Notification Requirements for Enterprises Involved in the Manufacturing of Utensils and Packaging. According to Article 57 of the Food Sanitation Act, enterprises are obligated to notify their products before the products are launched. This announcement provides a comprehensive clarification on which types of food packaging enterprises are subject to notification with the government.

China Proposes National Food Safety Standard (GB) Legislation Plan for 2024

On March 26, 2024, China National Health Commission (NHC) issued the draft of national food safety standard legislation plan for 2024 (hereafter as the Plan). 34 food standards are listed in the Plan, covering food products, food additives, food nutritional fortifiers, testing and determination method, as well as food business operation. Among them, 14 are new standards to be formulated, while the rest 20 standards are existing ones with revisions.
