China Opens GB 28050 “General Rules for Nutritional Labeling of Pre-Packaged Food” to Public Feedback

Mandatory nutrient labeling requirements have been expanded to include: saturated fat (acid), sugar, Vitamin A, and Calcium. Additionally more products are proposed to be exempted from nutrition labeling requirements such as food products that are packaged in a recycled glass (ceramic) bottle where labeling information cannot be printed

As revealed by an announcement issued on Dec. 19, 2018, China National Food Safety Standard Review Committee opened the updated GB 28050 "General Rules for Nutrition Labeling of Pre-Packaged Food" to public feedback, and any comments shall be sent back prior to Jan. 4th, 2019.

Here are the major revisions (proposed) compared to GB 28050-2011:

Scope expansion of food exempted from nutritional labeling

1. Apart from those items listed in GB 28050-2011, the following newly added items are exempt from nutrition labeling requirements
a) Raw or dried products that are simply cut or cleaned
b) Food that is packaged in a recycled glass (ceramic) bottle where labeling information cannot be printed.
2. The limit of surface area for food exempted from nutrition labeling is increased to 120 cm2 (for the total surface area) or 25 cm2 (for the largest surface area).

Others

  • The content claim requirements for n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) and soluble dietary fiber are added.

  • The standard terms of some nutrient function claims are optimized
