Japan Revises Three Food Additive Standards

The standards of three food additives including magnesium stearate, calcium carbonate, and peracetic acid have been revised in Japan.

On Jun. 23, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan (MHLW) announced the revision of standards for food additives including magnesium stearate, calcium carbonate, and peracetic acid, which became effective on the day of announcement.

Main changes of the regulation include:

  • Magnesium stearate can be used as food processing agent, and is only allowed to be used in foods of unconventional shape including capsule, tablet as well as pressed candy, the dosage of which should be determined according to production demand.

  • Calcium carbonate can be used as food processing agent and nutritional fortification substance in Japan. The limit for usage of calcium carbonate has been deleted this time, which should be used as appropriate according to the production demand.

  • The standard for components of peracetic acid and peracetic acid preparations has been revised. No other substance can be used as the raw materials of peracetic acid and peracetic acid preparations except diluted aqueous solution for glacial acetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, 1-Hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid and octanoic acid
