An Overview of Infant Formula Import Data, H1, 2019

The Netherlands still exports the largest volume and value of infant formula to China. New Zealand’s export volume to China soared, recording an impressive 71% YOY growth in H1 2019, making it the Netherlands strongest competitor.

According to GAC data [1], China imported 165,836 tons of infant formula in H1 2019, valued at 17.4 billion yuan and representing YOY-growth of 24%.

Top Exporters' Performance: H1 2017-2019

Using the 2018 data as a reference, the top-ranked countries in terms of import volume and value haven't changed. However, only New Zealand, Holland, Ireland, Denmark, Australia and Switzerland are on track to exceed their 2018 import volume and value in 2019, suggesting further consolidation of the market.   • New Zealand has ramped up export volume significantly and has performed strongly, recording 71% in the first half of 2019 and 34% in 2018, putting it on a trajectory to overtake the Netherlands in the next few years.   • Meanwhile, Germany's exports suffered, falling by 50% compared to last year.



Newly Approved 24 Imported Infant Formula Recipes this year

  • Until now, China has approved 18 product lines from the Netherlands and 6 product lines from Denmark since the beginning of this year. However, New Zealand is starting to catch up:

    • Netherlands: 9 approved manufacturers, 55 production lines

    • New Zealand: 11 approved factories, 72 production lines
