Streptococcus Zooepidemicus Fermentation Approved as New Food Raw Material for Edible Hyaluronic Acid in Taiwan

Streptococcus zooepidemicus fermentation byproducts have been permitted for use as new food raw materials for edible hyaluronic acid in Taiwan.

On July 13, 2017, Taiwan FDA released an announcement related to the usage requirement for comb extract and streptococcus zooepidemicus fermentation, meaning that apart from comb extract, a new food raw material for edible hyaluronic acid is now permitted.

In order to ensure food safety, the announcement specifies their manufacturing methods, specifications, etc. The content of sodium hyaluronate in comb extract is less than 80%, and that in streptococcus zooepidemicus fermentation is more than 87%. In addition, both of their maximum daily usage is 80mg.

Manufacturers are required to comply with the requirements in the announcement; otherwise, a fine of NTD 30 thousands to 3 million is to be imposed.
