Taiwan Specifies Labeling Requirements for Small Prepackaged Food

Except for traditional method, labeling items of small prepackaged foods is allowed to be disclosed by electronic means like QR code.

As revealed by an official notice released on September 1, 2021 with an immediate effect, small prepackaged food in Taiwan is now subject to the supervision of new labeling requirements.

According to the notice, small prepackaged food refers to the food that are packaged in the minimum sales unit (which refers to the smallest package that can be sold directly to consumers) and whose maximum surface area of the outer packaging is less than 20 cm2. Enterprises can choose either of the following two labelling formats.

Labeling items

  1. product name;

  2. expiry date;

  3. name and telephone number of the responsible domestic company;

  4. place of origin of the product;

  5. place of origin of raw materials which is required to be labeled as per regulations;

  6. reminder information such as allergens.

  3. "QR Code" or other electronic means. Reminder information shall also be accompanied on the top or bottom of the electronic labeling, such as "Scan here to get product information" or reminders with equivalent meaning.

 

Notes: Labeling items carried by electronic means should be disclosed according to Article 22, Paragraph 1, Subparagraphs 2-6 and 8-10 of the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation.
